Ever since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, video calling apps like Zoom and Skype witnessed a growth in their popularity. Zoom saw a 30 fold growth in the use of its app. The firm reported that 300 million participants logged into the software daily for meetings, classes, socializing, and other purposes. According to its CEO, sales are expected to reach $1.8bn, double the original forecast.
Due to the lockdown as a result of Covid-19, many new players decided to take the market share from Zoom. Facebook also launched new features in its video calling service. One popular feature was participants can add non Facebook users to calls. 50 people could participate at one time. Google also decided to compete in the video conferencing market with its app – Meet.
Previously, the app was only available to paying G suite customers. Therefore, it was out of the reach of masses. Sensing the opportunity to attract customers, Google decided to make Meet free.
Popular Features of Meet
- 250 Participants Allowed in One Call
- Screen Sharing
- Unlimited Meeting Time (Until 30th September)
- Cast Meetings Through Chromecast
- Call Recording
Google Meet in Gmail
Google decided to make things convenient for users. Therefore, it decided to merge Meet in its Gmail app. There are mix reviews to it. Many people do not like this integration, while others are calling it a welcome addition. Personally, I prefer to keep my emails and meetings separate. Additionally, most of us are back working in offices. Therefore, video conferencing is no longer required. Instead of feeling frustrated, just remove the Meet from Gmail. Yes, Google allows users to remove this button.
